Heart attacks: a health problem that can be avoided

Heart attacks are caused when the coronary arteries that carry oxygen and blood to the heart become blocked, usually by clots. When this happens, part of the heart muscle begins to be damaged until it collapses. Another reason for heart attacks is cardiovascular disease: hypertension, arrhythmia, heart failure, among others. 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more people die each year from a heart attack than from any other cause. And there are a number of risk factors that are triggers of obstruction in the veins. These include consuming tobacco and large amounts of alcohol, eating an unbalanced diet, and not exercising regularly. 

Signs that tell you that you may have a heart attack

Although all heart attacks happen in the same way, they do not always present the same symptoms, nor do they have the same degree of pain intensity. There are even cases in which the patient does not give any signal, but simply goes into cardiac arrest.  

However, the first symptom of a heart attack is usually constant chest pain or discomfort, also known as angina. Added to this are pains that can be in the arm, left shoulder, jaw or back. 

In addition, some people begin to detect heart attack by "minimal symptoms" such as indigestion or nausea, lightheadedness, fainting, pale complexion, and shortness of breath. Commonly, it is women who experience a greater part of these symptoms.
