Every hour a new person with cancer is detected in Costa Rica, while two years ago it was every two hours, so it is extremely important not only to prevent by monitoring their health but also to plan expenses.

According to data from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), during the past year 9,255 new cases were diagnosed in the country, becoming the second cause of death, projected to be the main one. This is because cardiovascular diseases have decreased by 2%, while cancer has increased by 24% in the last 11 years.

According to Dr. Ricardo Montenegro of the Costa Rican Oncology Institute (ICOT), the largest number of people with cancer is concentrated in San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago.

“Medical check-ups and cancer tests can find problems before they occur, but it is very rare for people to have them done on a regular basis. In Costa Rica, 90% from cancers can be cured in early stages. Check-ups and exams What a person needs will depend on their gender, age, health, family history and lifestyle, such as what they eat, how active they stay and whether they smoke or use illegal drugs, ”added Dr. Montenegro.

In the case of a confirmatory biopsy, the doctor warned that valuable time is wasted for the patient to start treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

In addition, it is extremely important to become aware that these cases can generate important expenses for which people are not yet prepared, so it is essential to know options to face this type of illness. “If they are diagnosed early, they can face less treatment with drugs; however, in late stages, between chemotherapies and radiotherapies, the cost of treatment rises and even if all these treatments are done, the chances of cure diminish as the days go by ”, added the specialist.

Anthony Sierra, CEO of BMI Seguros, commented that unfortunately, the insurance culture in Costa Rica is not yet well established, much less against this type of disease, but we have the task of informing about the existence of products that can be economic solutions for face these types of conditions, most of which need quick answers.

“The statistics show that we do not have a culture of savings. For this reason, these diseases that have a progressive evolution greatly destabilize the economy of people, even those who have savings and pay it completely in the treatment, sell their assets to cover these expenses and even get into debt, "he added.

Unlike major medical insurance, cancer insurance provides an insured amount stipulated in the contract from the beginning. It keeps track of the disease; After diagnosis, it is treated, there are surgeries, up to the top of the insured sum.
